5 Jul 2003 Although many international and regional human rights instruments guarantee rights related to freedom of religion or belief, none attempts to define the term “religion.” The absence of a definition of “religion” is not peculiar to international human rights conventions; most national constitutions also include clauses on freedom of religion without defining “religion.” hus we are presented, on the one hand, with important provisions guaranteeing fundamental rights pertaining to religion, but on the other hand the term itself is left undefined. - An article by Jeremy Gunn, published in the Harvard Human Rights Journal, Spring 2003. Radical Islam in Central Asia: responding to Hizb ut-Tahrir
5 Jul 2003 Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami (The Party of Islamic Liberation) stands apart from better known radical Islamist movements by its apparent opposition to the use of violence. But its views are highly radical, advocating the overthrow of governments throughout the Muslim world and their replacement by an Islamic state in the form of a recreated Caliphate. It has grown quickly in Central Asia and been met with a heavy-handed repression that threatens to radicalise members still further and sow the seeds of greater Islamist extremism in the region. - A report from the International Crisis Group - read the executive summary and view the full report (PDF file, 680 Ko).

Bosnia-Herzegovina: can faith-based NGOs advance interfaith reconciliation?
18 Mar 2003 The range of initiatives undertaken by faith-based NGOs in Bosnia and Herzegovina has evolved over time. Taken together, their activities suggest that reconciliation may be furthered both directly and obliquely through projects as varied as soup kitchens, joint public statements, school councils, and choirs. In a postconflict situation, it is important but not sufficient to feed, house, and clothe. International assistance, including assistance from faith-based NGOs, should also try to help people overcome the conflict that created the problem in the first place. When faith-based NGOs have focused on that need, they have often been successful. A report from the United States Institute of Peace.
Religion and American foreign policy: prophetic, perilous, inevitable
11 Mar 2003 Transcript of a discussion which took place on February 5, 2003, at the Brookings Institution, Washington D.C. "How religious and moral traditions help us define what sort of intervention -- military, economic or diplomatic -- is appropriate in different situations." The presenters and respondents explore the moral and ethical traditions from which Americans draw in determining America’s international obligations, and examine how groups and individuals with different religious and moral traditions influence the formation of U.S. foreign policy.
A village in Java tells story of militant Islam's growth
23 Jan 2003 Interesting report from a village in Java in the Christian Science Monitor. A religious dispute in this overlooked community is being repeated in dozens of villages across the world's most populous Muslim nation. On one side of the religious struggle are the majority of Indonesian Muslims, traditionalists who have long blended local beliefs with Islamic doctrine and tend to be tolerant of other religions. On the other, is a growing militant minority, emphasizing their ties to the Arab world and "legitimate" Islam and dismissing traditional practice as backward and superstitious. http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/0123/p01s04-woap.html
